Dead Week

At my school, this week has been our Dead Week. Here it means something a tad different than it does at other schools because we still have classes all week. Basically it's the same as any other school week, the only difference is that (because it's Dead Week) our professors aren't supposed to give us exams or quizzes. So yes, we're learning all new material this week that will also be on the Final Exam, we're still given assignments, and we're expected to study as well.

All in all, it's the most stressful week in the entire school year! At least during Finals Week we don't have classes and assignments and new material! However, it is super nice that the quiet hours are 24 hours a day, so I don't have to worry about being woken up in the afternoon when I'm given a 20 minute window in which I can take a nap.

As you can imagine, I've been living on caffeinated sodas and chai tea while getting less sleep and getting more stressed. Some of the up sides are the RAs bringing candy and other snacks around to the various study areas to help boost our energy, the quiet hours that I mentioned above, the opportunity to "pet your stress away" with puppies and kitties in the Library, and the support that everyone has for each other.

My school is known for its sense of community that we all feel here. The campus is really large, so there's no way to get to know everyone, but that doesn't matter when it comes to helping each other with anything and everything! You dropped your papers? 20 people are right there to help you pick things up. You sneeze and don't have a tissue? Everyone will offer you one. Want a stick of gum? We all have a pack and would love to give you a piece!

This sense of community is even stronger now that the stress level that everyone is feeling is so high. We're getting together with strangers at tables in the Libraries to help each other study and sharing copies of review packets for others who didn't get their own copy and even buying snacks/food for each other when the energy and motivation is low.

Whenever someone asks me why I chose this school, and why I fit in and feel so happy here, I always answer (first by saying that they have a really good animal science program) that it's the community. With your family, friends, and an entire student body as a support system that want to see you succeed it's one of the best places on earth to be when the stress is high and the positivity is low like during Dead Week.

What's Dead Week like at your school? Let me know!!
