A Chance to Travel - Update

If you missed my post "A Chance to Travel" you can read it HERE.

In July you may have seen a lack of posts about France... Well, that's because I wasn't able to go. My dad's job underwent some major changes and he was on call at his office for the entire summer which meant no traveling!

I still have high hopes that he'll be able to travel to France and that I'll be able to go with him, it's just unclear as to when that'll be...

As always, I'll see you on Thursday.

A Parking Ticket Writer's Opinion on Parking Tickets

Walk, check for a permit, walk, check for a permit, walk, check for a permit.....

Walk, check the meter, walk, check the meter, walk, check the meter.....

Almost every day, I leave my apartment to walk through parking lots for several hours at a time with the sun on my neck, and my handheld and printer hanging by my side. In a bright orange and yellow vest, I'm anything by subtle when I'm walking through rows and rows of cars - which is both a good and a bad thing.

Some days people will see me in a parking lot after finding a ticket on their windshield, come over, and try and get me to undo the ticket they received. I've heard every excuse in the book... things like "I was only gone for a minute" "I have no where else to park" "You don't understand, I had an emergency" "The meter just barely expired" "I'm sorry I'm late, the meeting ran longer than the amount of time I paid for at this meter" as well as things like "Well why can't you just take it back?" "I don't understand why I was given this ticket" "You can't give me a ticket" and (my personal favorite) "I don't have time for this".

Something I don't think people realize is that for every person who is angry about being given a parking ticket there is someone else calling and complaining about not being able to park in a lot that they bought a permit for - especially when it's because of people without permits or the wrong permits.

I understand that no one wants to be given a parking or a meter ticket. Nothing ruins a day faster than seeing the thin slip of paper flapping in the wind underneath a windshield wiper, but keep in mind that I'm just a person trying to pay for college - I'm not excited about you getting a parking ticket either.

After a ticket has been printed, I can't do anything about it. It's out of my hands and into the hands of the Traffic Court and the Transportation Department - so no matter how much I get yelled at I can't "take it back".

Even though it may not seem like it, I do my best to be fair about how I write tickets. Our handhelds let us know if a vehicle has been issued a ticket before, which means that my only option is to issue another ticket. If someone's vehicle comes up clean then I'll write them a warning (which costs them no money) with the hope that it'll be enough to keep them from parking incorrectly again (and yes, it comes up in my handheld when someone has gotten a warning before, which also means I can only write them a ticket).

Unfortunately, just by walking up to a car I can't tell how long it's been there or whether or not the driver had an emergency or if their meeting ran long. It doesn't help that the meters in the lots don't say how long they've been expired.

The vehicles most definitely don't tell me what their drivers do and don't have time for.

When I'm going through the lots, all I see is a car without a permit, the wrong permit, or an unpaid meter. My job is to ticket them when I see them, so that's what I do.

I hope this gave you a little bit of insight into what I do and what it's like to write parking tickets.
I'll see you on Tuesday

Back at School

This past Wednesday I got that familiar tightness in my chest that only comes from going back to school. The sweaty palms, the awkward social encounters, everyone being at Walmart at the same time... Nothing says "back to school" quite like all the stores being filled to the brim with students and school supplies.

For the past several weeks, I've been scrambling to get everything together and really feeling the pressure of my potential to forget important things.

After mustering up the strength to drive for 8 hours straight with a car full of my college belongings, I made it there in time to sprint to get my apartment keys. I was still too late... But it's the thought that counts right? (I was able to officially get my keys the next day.)

I had a few days on my own, and then my roommate moved in. The whole time I was alone I was really excited about her getting here, but after she got here I wasn't sure what to do with myself! She wanted space to unpack - I wanted to help carry her things up to her room - she really just wanted some space to unpack her things - I wanted to sit and talk to her a little bit about the place while she unpacked - she most definitely just wanted to have some alone time to unpack. So I went back to my room and put on a movie and worked on random things that I tried really hard to come up with so I wasn't bothering her!

As of right now, I still have about a week before my classes officially start. By that point, I hope I'll feel more ready than I feel now... I need to sort out my school supplies and figure out exactly how long the walk is from my apartment to the center of campus. I have high hopes of this year being the best - Not only because I have my own apartment and a great roommate, but because I'm taking more classes for my Majors, and I have friends that are also back at school! Compaired to the summer, I think things are really looking up.

I'll see you on Thursday

7 Month Resolution Update

Resolution 1: Save up the money that I need to be able to pay for my Housing and Textbooks for the 16-17 school year on my own

I have officially ordered my textbooks for Fall semester! I paid for them myself, so I've completed that portion of this resolution as well as paying my rent for August! This resolution is on its way to being completed and I couldn't be more proud of myself - I worked hard and it's working out.

Resolution 2: DRINK MORE WATER!!!!!!

Water water water... I've been better about it at work than I have been at home becuase I have a huge waterbottle for work that helps me remember to drink water (I'll drink almost all of it while at work - it's like 3 gallons or maybe just a gallon or something big like that... Hahaha). When I'm at home I don't really have any reminders to drink water so I forget to drink any which I need to work on.

Resolution 3: Read at least 20 books by the end of the year

I was hoping to have read 20 before the end of this summer so that any other books that I read are just bonuses - but after I started working I had zero time to read so I haven't gotten as far with this as I've wanted. Hopefully I'll still achieve this resolution

Resolution 5: Stop Eating after 9pm

I've been going to bed around 9:30 so it's been a lot easier for me to maintain this resolution - which is really great for me! Now that I'm back at school I'm worried that I'll go back to my old ways of eating late night snacks before heading to bed... This is something that I struggle with a lot because I always feel hungry even when I'm not... Bleh

Resolution 6: Snack less, eat actual Meals more

For this upcoming school year I'm really confident in my ability to cook but not in my ability to grocery shop with the intention of cooking - which I think is going to be a learning curve for me!

July 2016 Overview

I don't have very much to say about July... I started at my job and worked over 40 hours a week the whole month. I got decorations and a chair for my room in my apartment, and I did nothing productive outside of work. July wasn't as exciting a month as I had expected - I didn't do anything as a sort of celebration for the end of my summer like I'd hoped... Oh well! I'm more excited than I think I should be about getting back to school tomorrow!

I'll see you on Thursday

things kind of "hit the fan"

Hello again friends! It's been a while - a few weeks.

For all of July I focused on work so as soon as July ended I realized how much I needed to do all at once before going to school... Basically, all of my plans hit the fan and I've been all over the place trying to figure out how to fit everything in all at once... I go back to school this Wednesday and I don't think that I'm any closer to being ready like I should be by now.

So forgive the lack of posts from the past while because things have been crazy!

Thanks for your support, I'll see you on Tuesday!
